Park Slope Club Associate

Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York, United StatesOperationsPart-Time

WHO ARE WE?

Story Time Chess is an award-winning early education company that teaches chess to children from the surprising age of three. By harnessing the power of stories, our curriculum has reached over 150,000 children in homes, schools, and clubs. Our Park Slope Club in Brooklyn is where that happens in person, every week.

About the role

The Park Slope Club Associate keeps our club safe, welcoming, organized, and running smoothly. This is a hands-on, child-facing operations role. You supervise children during transitions, run school pickups, manage arrivals and dismissals, keep the space in good shape, and make sure every child and family has a good experience walking through our door.

On weekends you are the onsite shift lead and key carrier, responsible for the safe and smooth operation of the building when the Club Coordinator is not there.

This role is intended for a current or former Story Time Chess tutor who already knows our program, our curriculum, and how we work with children.

Details

  • Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY (onsite)
  • Type: Part-time, approximately 25 hours per week
  • Compensation: $25 per hour
  • Schedule: Wednesday through Sunday. Wednesday to Friday about 4 hours per day, Saturday about 7 hours, Sunday about 6 hours.
  • Reports to: Head of Tutoring & Clubs

Child supervision and safety

  • Supervise children before class, after class, during transitions, and while waiting for pickup.
  • Keep the club safe, positive, and organized throughout your shift.
  • Monitor common areas and respond quickly to safety, behavioral, or operational concerns.
  • Release children only to an approved parent, guardian, or pickup person.
  • Step into a classroom when an emergency or unexpected staffing gap calls for it.

  • Complete assigned school pickups on weekday shifts.
  • Safely escort groups of children on foot from nearby schools back to the club.
  • Know at all times which children are expected, picked up, absent, or need follow-up.
  • Communicate pickup issues to the right team member immediately.

Family experience

  • Welcome children and families as they arrive.
  • Manage check-in, dismissal, and the front desk.
  • Answer routine in-person questions and make trial families feel prepared and welcome.

  • Print and organize rosters, attendance sheets, story lists, and daily materials.
  • Keep the front desk, lobby, storage, and classrooms organized.
  • Complete routine daily cleaning including vacuuming, mopping, and resetting rooms.
  • Complete deeper cleaning tasks on a rotating basis on weekend shifts.
  • Monitor supplies and the condition of the club, and pass needs to the Clubs Specialist for follow-through.

Weekend shift leadership

On Saturday and Sunday you are the onsite shift lead and key carrier when the Club Coordinator is not present. That means opening and closing the club, holding the keys and following opening and closing procedures, starting and ending programming on time, helping tutors and families with immediate questions, managing the flow of children and classrooms, and escalating anything significant. You direct the operation of the building during your shift, but you are not responsible for tutor performance management or disciplinary decisions.

Who you are

  • Current or previous Story Time Chess tutoring experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiar with our curriculum, expectations, and teaching approach.
  • Excellent judgment around children and child safety.
  • Comfortable supervising groups of young children.
  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable being responsible for opening or closing a physical location.
