About the Role

Story Time Chess is looking for a Club Lead to run and grow our Park Slope Club. We teach young children chess through stories, characters, games, and imaginative play, and our club brings that experience to life through weekly classes, camps, and community events.

You will lead the daily club experience, build relationships with families, support tutors, and take direct responsibility for sales and enrollment. We are looking for someone who enjoys welcoming a new family, understands how to turn interest into enrollment, and follows through until the next step is complete.

You will work closely with our Head of Tutoring and coordinate the work of our Club Associate, who provides coverage during some weekday and weekend hours. You will also work the front desk yourself and stay actively involved throughout the club. This role combines independent leadership with the practical work of making a children's program run well.

Sales and Enrollment

You will be accountable for moving prospective families through the enrollment process and helping current families stay engaged. You should be comfortable working toward goals, asking families to enroll, and taking initiative when classes have room to grow.

  • Manage club inquiries with prompt, consistent outreach by phone, email, and in person. Keep a clear record of each family's interests and next steps.
  • Own the trial process from booking and preparation through discussing the child's experience and securing enrollment.
  • Explain programs, class placement, credits, pricing, and policies confidently. Address concerns and help families complete registration and payment.
  • Track inquiries, trial attendance, conversion, retention, and enrollment by class. Work with the Head of Tutoring to fill open spaces, meet enrollment and revenue goals, and adjust your approach based on results.
  • Reconnect with families who stop attending and identify appropriate opportunities for additional classes, camps, events, and referrals.

Family Experience and Retention

  • Get to know students and parents, welcome new families, and create an environment where children feel comfortable and families feel recognized.
  • Answer questions, communicate changes, and handle concerns calmly and consistently with club policies. Involve the Head of Tutoring when a larger decision is needed.
  • Notice changes in attendance, difficulty settling in, or concerns about class fit. Work with families and tutors on practical solutions that help children keep coming back.

Daily Operations and Team Coordination

  • Oversee the front desk, opening and closing, room readiness, and the daily flow of students, families, and tutors. Address problems as they arise.
  • Coordinate responsibilities and handoffs with the Club Associate, providing clear direction and consistent procedures across shifts.
  • Keep classrooms, common areas, equipment, and materials clean, organized, stocked, and ready for use. Complete setup and cleanup tasks as needed.
  • Monitor safety concerns, respond to first-aid needs according to company procedures, and maintain current first aid, CPR, and epinephrine auto-injector training or certification as required.

Tutor Support and Class Quality

  • Make sure tutors arrive prepared with accurate rosters, room assignments, materials, student information, and clear expectations. Coordinate coverage needs with the Head of Tutoring.
  • Observe classes and help tutors with student transitions, classroom challenges, and family communication. Offer practical feedback when appropriate.
  • Identify patterns in teaching quality, student engagement, and parent feedback, and work with the Head of Tutoring on coaching and improvements.

Systems and Administration

  • Keep schedules, attendance, trial information, client records, package usage, and internal notes accurate in company systems so teammates can coordinate work reliably.
  • Keep procedures organized, communicate purchasing needs, and improve recurring operational issues. Keep the Head of Tutoring informed about priorities and concerns.

Local Marketing and Community Events

  • Attract new families through local outreach, community relationships, and referrals, in coordination with company marketing.
  • Keep marketing materials and signage accurate and visible, and flag needed updates to the website and class listings.
  • Coordinate tournaments, workshops, camps, and community events, including preparation, staffing needs, and family communication. Turn interest from these events into trial bookings and enrollment.

Your Authority and Support

You will be trusted to make day-to-day decisions about club operations, family service, room setup, tutor logistics, and associate responsibilities. We expect you to solve routine problems independently and keep the team informed.

You will work with the Head of Tutoring on larger pricing decisions, major schedule changes, long-term staffing plans, significant credits or refunds, serious family concerns, and strategic changes. Good judgment includes recognizing when a decision needs broader input.

What We Are Looking For

  • Experience leading a team, program, or operation, with sound judgment, initiative, and reliable follow-through.
  • Experience in sales, enrollment, or customer relationships, with confidence discussing pricing, addressing concerns, and asking for a commitment.
  • Warm, clear communication with children, families, and coworkers, including patience and composure during challenging moments.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail, with comfort managing competing needs, learning client-management tools, and using enrollment data.
  • A genuine interest in children's education and a willingness to learn our programs, support coworkers, and handle practical daily tasks.

Relevant backgrounds may include children's programming, education, enrichment or recreation programs, hospitality, retail management, customer experience, sales, or community management. We welcome applicants whose experience demonstrates the skills above, whether or not they have worked in a chess program.

Schedule and Location

This is a full-time, on-site position at our Park Slope Club, with an expected schedule of 40 hours per week. Working hours are built around club programming and include afternoon class hours, evenings, and some weekend coverage or special events. Camps and school-break programming may require different hours.

There is flexibility in the exact days and hours, coordinated with the Head of Tutoring and Club Associate. The weekly schedule and coverage expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Compensation and Benefits

  • $68,000 annual salary
  • Health insurance
  • Paid time off and paid sick time
